Progress Report (3)

Now that we all bring the results each of us has interviewed: there are totally 5 couples, 10 copies of our questionnaire back. We read through all of them, and pick out 4 variables which we think most possibly affect the couples' attitude toward their relationships in SL: age, gender, country and educational background.
As my part, I interviewed the couple I mentioned in my SL Story. The interesting thing is: They're real couple both in real life and in SL, and their age and educational background are all the same. But related to Question 16, 17 and 20, they have totally different points of view and values. The man tends to think that real life and SL can be separated; in his answer to Question 16, he says he never considers his affections in SL as an act of adultery because "RL stays in RL and SL stays on SL. They're not the same." So he doesn't make his avatar representative of his real self in RL, either---"It's fun to play. Sometimes it's me, sometimes no." However, the woman tends to think that we should be loyal to only one relationship, either in real life or in SL; unless one's relationships in real life and SL are with the same person, or his/her affections in SL is an act of adultery. She says, "Values of a real emotion relation are important---We're not dolls. If people all deal with the two relationships simultaneously, they'll mix feelings of their bf/gf in RL and make their RL couple a mess." So she also makes her avatar as close as she is in real life because "she has nothing to hide".
I think the main variable that causes their different answers to these key questions is gender. Although their countries are different, either (the man is from France, and the woman is from USA), later we find that choosing country as one of our variables is not very appropriate; because after all, our impressions of "what people from a country should be like" are just stereotypes, there are still many people different form our impressions.
After finishing our survey, now we have to discuss how to present our final project. We decide to make a short film, in it each of us has to give a brief introduction to the couples we individually interviewed. As to the poster on SL, we distribute our works as following: Monica is in charge of the introduction and conclusion part; Judy and I will make a chart, listing the couples' names and the variables we picked out; and Jocelyn will quote from each of the interviewee's answers the most meaningful sentence.

Progress Report (1)

When we first discuss, trying to come up with the topic of our final project, Monica says since she knows some famous dating spots in SL (http://www.slindex.com/secondlife/Romance.htm), maybe we can just visit these places and interview the couples there about their attitudes toward romantic relationship in SL. We all think it sounds interesting, besides, those spots are really beautiful; what's more, this topic can be elevated to moral issue (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2008/nov/14/second-life-virtual-worlds-dating). Since nowadays Internet has almost become part of our lives, many people start to pursue and enjoy romantic relationships in virtual world. But if they've already had lovers in real life, do their romantic relationships in SL become adulteries? Should they be loyal to their relationships either in real life or in SL, or both? How? Well, different people have different answers to these questions, and that's what we're going to probe into through our final project. Thus we've decided our topic---"Values of Romantic Relationship in SL".
To continue our progress, the next step we'll conduct a survey in SL; but before that, we'll have to work out a questionnaire first. And then each of us is expected to interview 1-2 couples in SL so that we can discuss based on the results we get from them.

A Warmhearted Couple Who Are Willing To Help (Final Revision)

Why do many people find it difficult to get other people's help in Second Life? I was lucky to meet a warmhearted couple who voluntarily helped me in Second Life.
When I was flying over New York City, I saw a man and a woman standing in a room. Out of curiosity, I came down to them to see what they were doing. Suddenly, they started to talk to me. I told them I was new in SL, so they invited me to their home to change my appearance.
Their home is on a beautiful island. The man, whose name is Nerion in SL, is a French in RL; and his partner, mellie, is an American native. They bought the island in SL, and Nerion created all the things on it, naming it "Eagles island" because mellie loves eagles.
While working on my avatar, I felt awkward because of my poor skills. They patiently taught me how to change my appearance in step-by-step instruction. They suggested me to make my avatar taller and try different skin colors; Nerion even gave me several skin colors to choose from!
Later they guided me to look around their island and their two-floored house. In their house, they taught me how to use gestures. mellie gave me a lot of gestures, and Nerion led me to dance. Then we three danced and chatted together for a long while! When hearing that I used Second Life for a course assignment, they encouraged me to learn as much as I can because Nerion himself also uses SL to practice English.
Before I left, I thanked sincerely for their help. mellie and I had a big-hug-goodbye, and they gave me L$100 as a welcome gift, saying that I could visit them anytime.
Why do they treat me so kind? "Making people happy is also making them happy" is a value that they hold in both real life and Second Life. Being serious about this question, they said that the difficulty of building trust and friendship in Second Life comes from people who think they can hide behind the computers and act like people totally different from their real lives.
I was really touched by the couple's value. I not only appreciate their kind help, but respect their characters. I think I was lucky to meet them, and I'm sure I will cherish our "virtual-but-real" friendship.

A Warmhearted Couple Who Are Willing To Help In SL (Revision 1)

Since many people find it difficult to get other people's help in SL, I think I was lucky to meet a warmhearted couple who voluntarily came to help me by accident.
When I was "flying" in New York City, I saw a man and a woman standing in a room; out of curiosity, I descended beside them to see what they were doing. Suddenly, they started to talk to me. I told them I was new in SL, and they said I need a better avatar first (their avatars are really cool!). Actually I didn't really know how to change it, so they invited me to their "home" so that they could help me finish it.
Their home is a beautiful island. The man, whose name is Nerion in SL, is a French in RL; and his love (he calls her "my love"), mellie, is an American native. They bought the island in SL, and Nerion created all the things on it, naming it "Eagles island" because mellie loves eagles. Then we started to work on my avatar. I was awkward in using SL and was afraid that they would be angry at me, but they didn't; on the contrary, they patiently taught me in detail step by step. They suggested me to make my avatar taller and try different skin colors; Nerion even gave me several skin colors to choose from!
Later they guided me to look around their island and their two-floored house. In their house, they started to teach me how to use gestures. mellie gave me a lot of gestures, and Nerion somehow made me dance, we three danced together for a long while! They asked me why I used SL, I said it was for a course, and they encouraged me to "learn as much as I can in SL" because Nerion himself also used SL to practice his English.
Before I left, I thanked sincerely for their help. mellie and I had a big-hug-goodbye, and they gave me L$100 as "welcome gift", saying that I could visit them anytime. Out of curiousity, I politely asked them why they treated me so kind. They told me that they like to help new people in SL, because everyone starts as beginers; what's more, it always makes them happy when they can help those who need help. They have a value, both in RL and SL: "Making people happy is also making them happy." Here they suddenly became a bit serious. They said the problem many people have on SL is that they think they can hide behind the computers and act like a person totally different from their RL, usually just think about themselves and don't care about others, so it's very hard to trust and give real friendships in SL. That's also the reason why people have difficulties finding help in SL.
I was really touched by the couple's value; it made me not only appreciate their kindly help, but even start to respect their characters. I think I was lucky to meet them, and I'm sure I will cherish our "virtual-but-real" friendship.

[20:05] Judy Meiler: Ok!

[20:05] Aleli Damiano: I have send it to u on the msn Judy...

[20:06] Aleli Damiano: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Amsterdam/128/128/2

[20:06] Aleli Damiano: here...

[20:06] Aleli Damiano: I will wait for u there girls.. c u

[20:07] Meredith Rhosar: wow so fast!!!

[20:07] Aleli Damiano: train is coming...

[20:08] Meredith Rhosar: so Monica you can go on or lead us to some places you'd like to:)

[20:09] Aleli Damiano: I wanted to write about this place because according to some small research I have this is one of the best reproductions in SL

[20:12] Aleli Damiano: I went to Dam Square and there is the Madame Tussauds wax museum...

[20:12] Aleli Damiano: though is still in construction there are some figures there already...

[20:12] Judy Meiler: Yeah, I had been to Amsterdam before, there is really like the city in real life.

[20:12] Meredith Rhosar: but I suggest that you can choose some speicific places to introduce

[20:13] Meredith Rhosar: Madame Tussauds is a good example!!!

[20:13] Judy Meiler: In fact, I want to know more about the red district.

[20:13] Meredith Rhosar: cool!!!

[20:13] Aleli Damiano: actually I havent finished my story as I told teacher I want to write more about the red district

[20:14] Meredith Rhosar: haha also in a rush right? XD

[20:14] Aleli Damiano: but yesterday I could not acess to that place...I need to do some changes on my profile or fill some data in order to get there...

[20:14] Judy Meiler: So, can you do that?

[20:15] Aleli Damiano: not really, I mean I spend a whole evening trying to figure out the best way to present my story...as u may noticed I have changed everything

[20:15] Aleli Damiano: from my first presentation I mean...

[20:15] Meredith Rhosar: yes

[20:15] Judy Meiler: Yeah!

[20:16] Meredith Rhosar: and I like the arrangement of pictures and article

[20:16] Meredith Rhosar: comfortable

[20:16] Aleli Damiano: I wanna describe the place but also make it attractive for people to visit here....

[20:16] Meredith Rhosar: I think your pictures are successful!

[20:16] Aleli Damiano: thanks :)

[20:17] Judy Meiler: The pictures are really beautiful.

[20:17] Aleli Damiano: thanks, appreciate it...

[20:18] Aleli Damiano: u see how all those ads are actually not disturbing the old style of the place...?

[20:19] Meredith Rhosar: they're not big

[20:19] Aleli Damiano: yeah...

[20:19] Judy Meiler: Yes, I think it’s a place full of culture. Even though there is famous for sex business, but it doesn't make you feel uncomfortable and dirty.

[20:21] Aleli Damiano: that yes...that's right...and I have saw some sex workers...and did not feel unconfortable either...

[20:21] Aleli Damiano: I mean they are also part of the city's essence...

[20:22] Meredith Rhosar: uh Monica...may I ask why you mention red district?

[20:22] Meredith Rhosar: is that a feature of the city?

[20:22] Judy Meiler: Yeah, it has already become a famous sex culture now. Ha! Ha!

[20:23] Aleli Damiano: because when people talks about Amsterdam first thing that pop up is sex bussiness

[20:23] Meredith Rhosar: really?!

[20:23] Aleli Damiano: so I wanted to say that in SL that's also an important feature, cuz cant be very realistic if we skip that part...

[20:24] Judy Meiler: Yeah, that's true!

[20:24] Meredith Rhosar: haha sorry because I didn't know it...:S

[20:24] Aleli Damiano: no problem...

[20:24] Aleli Damiano: :)

[20:24] Meredith Rhosar: you don't need to skip

[20:25] Judy Meiler: Yeah, you have to write about that.

[20:25] Aleli Damiano: I mean if people skip the sex part when they built the city in SL it would not feel so real

[20:25] Meredith Rhosar: oh I see

[20:26] Meredith Rhosar: so you're going to write more?

[20:26] Judy Meiler: Yeah, because it has already become a really important feature of Amsterdam.

[20:26] Meredith Rhosar: haha I mean the article

[20:26] Meredith Rhosar: revise

[20:26] Aleli Damiano: yes...I need to get into the REd district first to collect information in order to enlarge my story...

[20:27] Judy Meiler: Yeah, looking forward to it! Ha! Ha!

[20:27] Aleli Damiano: no problem...I'll keep working :)

[20:28] Judy Meiler: Great!

[20:28] Aleli Damiano: thank you guys for ur comments...appreciate them...

The summary of the reader's and the editor's suggested revisions
At first I suggest Monica to choose some specific places to introduce, like Madame Tussauds she mentions; and Judy wants to know more about the red district.
Monica explains that she hasn't finished her story yet because some technical problems with SL make her unable to get into the red district again to collect more information. After she solves those problems, she'll sure to write more about the red district.

The brief comment on the entire article with respect to organization, length, logic, and style
We can see that Monica has changed almost everything from her first draft; and we all like her arrangement of pictures and article. She's really a good photo-taker!
At first I don't know that sex culture is an important feature of Amsterdame and wonder why Monica mentions the red district in her story. After they explain to me, I finally know that sex culture has already merged into the city and almost become part of the city's essence: even though Amsterdame is famous for sex businesses, it somehow doesn't make people feel uncomfortable.
Now we all agree that Monica shouldn't skip the sex part, and even should write more about it. We're all looking forward to her final revision!

Acquaintance With A Warmhearted Foreign Couple In SL

I just found an interesting feature of SL, which is that you can easily meet foreigners and freely chat with them to build up friendship in it.
When I was "flying" in New York City, I saw a man and a woman standing in a room; out of curiosity, I descended beside them, and they started to talk to me. I told them I was new in SL, they said I need a better avatar (their avatars are really cool!).
I was awkward in using SL and was afraid that they would be angry at me, but they didn't; on the contrary, they patiently taught me in detail step by step, saying that they like to help new people in SL.
Well, I'm sure I will visit them again, and I hope when we meet next time, I will be more skilled in using SL and also have a cool avatar!

Discussion on Meredith's news.

Writer: Meredith Rhosar (Meredith)

Reader: Aleli Damiano (Monica)
Organizer: Meimeiryo Littlebird (Jocelyn)

Dialogue

[20:03] Meimeiryo Littlebird: lets move on to last artical
[20:03] Aleli Damiano: it seems so...
[20:03] Aleli Damiano: ok...
[20:03] Meimeiryo Littlebird: i'll be organizer
[20:03] Aleli Damiano: reader
[20:03] Meredith Rhosar: haha a very short, short one~~~XDDD
[20:05] Aleli Damiano: ok, please introduce your story to us...
[20:05] Meredith Rhosar: It's about Business Recruitment
[20:05] Meredith Rhosar: a recent event in NCU
[20:05] Meredith Rhosar: and that's what I'm now busy for~~~XD
[20:06] Meredith Rhosar: and it will come to the end next Tuseday
[20:06] Meredith Rhosar: my article is an introduction to it
[20:06] Judy Meiler: but u are happy running it!
[20:06] Meimeiryo Littlebird: u enjoyed it XD
[20:07] Meredith Rhosar: i'm one of the "30 volunteered students"
[20:07] Meredith Rhosar: yes I do!!!
[20:07] Aleli Damiano: I have a question, is there any chance for English major to find some interesting job opportunities during the event
[20:07] Susie223 Chun shouts: after being told by a friend that his father was searching him online.
[20:08] Aleli Damiano: and if it's so what kind of jobs are available?
[20:09] Meredith Rhosar: i think English professionist is essential to all the businesses
[20:09] Judy Meiler: but I think the English skill is a basic ability in all the business now.
[20:10] Meredith Rhosar: there's also foreign students joined the business employment instructions
[20:10] Meredith Rhosar: they came to listen
[20:10] Aleli Damiano: yeah, that's true but do we need to have some business background?
[20:11] Meredith Rhosar: no we don't need to
[20:11] Meredith Rhosar: if you're hired, they will train you
[20:12] Judy Meiler: So can we find a good job opportunity through it successfully?
[20:12] Aleli Damiano: oh, that's interesting!
[20:12] Meredith Rhosar: next Tuesday is the Careers Fair, maybe you can come and take a look
[20:12] Meredith Rhosar: yes I think so
[20:13] Meimeiryo Littlebird: but i think if we want to join business, we still need to have that kind of background isn't it?
[20:13] Aleli Damiano: sure..
[20:14] Judy Meiler: yeah I think so too.
[20:14] Meredith Rhosar: you'll have opportunities to do job interviews
[20:14] Meredith Rhosar: I think business background is notthe most important
[20:15] Judy Meiler: now it is really hard to find a good jub witout the background.
[20:15] Aleli Damiano: they make appointments with you or is it in the very spot...
[20:15] Meimeiryo Littlebird: i don't think any technology company would spend time to train a english major student without any experienceXDDD
[20:15] Meredith Rhosar: but maybe you have to gain some related experience and pocess some basic qualities
[20:16] Meimeiryo Littlebird: that what i mean, u cannot be totally none-experiencedXDDDD
[20:16] Judy Meiler: I think so too. I think we don't have any distinguished ability to compete with other people.
[20:16] Aleli Damiano: that's always the problem...
[20:16] Meredith Rhosar: English is important I think
[20:17] Meredith Rhosar: many people can't speak English well
[20:17] Meredith Rhosar: so that's our advantage
[20:17] Judy Meiler: but now it is so many people good at english
[20:17] Meredith Rhosar: we only need to combine it to other fields
[20:18] Judy Meiler: and many people good at second foreign language too.
[20:18] Meimeiryo Littlebird: so we can say english is true important, but now it is also essential for looking a job.
[20:18] Meredith Rhosar: well, that's true...
[20:18] Judy Meiler: so we have to gain other specific ability too.
[20:19] Meredith Rhosar: and combine with English
[20:19] Judy Meiler: yeah that's right!
[20:19] Aleli Damiano: then, I guess I should keep working on my Chinese abilities, I
[20:19] Meimeiryo Littlebird: yap, so owning only english ability is totally not enough
[20:19] Meredith Rhosar: Feminism is incredibly no use for finding a job XDDDD
[20:19] Judy Meiler: Monica, Chinese is very iportant now.
[20:19] Aleli Damiano: I wish I can be fluent in all three of them...
[20:20] Meimeiryo Littlebird: Feminism is absolutly uselessXDDDD
[20:20] Judy Meiler: u can find job also in China if u are good at Chinese.
[20:21] Meimeiryo Littlebird: like doing an interpreter or something
[20:21] Aleli Damiano: yeah, I am considering that...
[20:21] Judy Meiler: China is really a big market.
[20:22] Meredith Rhosar: interpreter is difficult!!!
[20:22] Meimeiryo Littlebird: but if u only have language specialty, that's all u can do......
[20:23] Meredith Rhosar: yeah, so we must learn something else
[20:23] Judy Meiler: yeah, so we would become miserable! Ha! Ha!
[20:24] Aleli Damiano: yes, but Ill love the challenge...I actually have work experience too...and I dont think is the only thing I can do...
[20:25] Meimeiryo Littlebird: hey~we're running out of time
[20:25] Judy Meiler: so Monica do u think master degree can make us find good job?
[20:25] Meredith Rhosar: so...any comment or suggestion?
[20:25] Meimeiryo Littlebird: make it longerXDDDD
[20:26] Meredith Rhosar: how???
[20:26] Aleli Damiano: I am not sure about taiwanese market but in my country it definitely helps a lot
[20:26] Meimeiryo Littlebird: by telling more about each event
[20:27] Meredith Rhosar: oh ok
[20:27] Meimeiryo Littlebird: or like post some activities pictures
[20:27] Aleli Damiano: yeah that's great idea!
[20:28] Meredith Rhosar: maybe can quoteour afterthoughts for preparing the whole event?
[20:28] Judy Meiler: yeah, because it is really hard to find job opportunities now, I don't know whether we sholud go out and find a job faster and better?
[20:28] Aleli Damiano: it's gonna make it very attractive!
[20:29] Meredith Rhosar: can I quote our afterthoughs for preparing for the whole event?
[20:30] Meimeiryo Littlebird: but ur goal is to introduce this event, maybe instead of post afterthoughts for preparing u should say more about the Business Recruitment itself will be better
[20:30] Meredith Rhosar: ok i see
[20:31] Judy Meiler: you can talk about what training and benefit the business would give the students in NCU.
[20:31] Meimeiryo Littlebird: or else it will become more like a 心得文XDDD
[20:32] Meredith Rhosar: but it's after you're hired...:S
[20:32] Judy Meiler: I mean the privilidge.
[20:32] Meredith Rhosar: oh ok...
[20:33] Meimeiryo Littlebird: yeah~i agree with judy~that's what reader want to know, such like what's the percentage u can get hired if u attend this eventXDDDD
[20:33] Meredith Rhosar: nn
[20:34] Aleli Damiano: or u could even mentioned about students that got really great job opportunities...
[20:34] Aleli Damiano: people that were hired....
[20:34] Meredith Rhosar: ok...
[20:35] Judy Meiler: I think u can use essential to instead of benefical.
[20:35] Meredith Rhosar: hey what's up?
[20:35] Aleli Damiano: what's up with what?
[20:35] Meredith Rhosar: but I've already used that word...
[20:36] Meredith Rhosar: i'm talking to the teacher XD
[20:36] Meimeiryo Littlebird: hahaha

Suggested Revisions:

We think Meredith's news is a very good brief introduction about Business Recruitment, but it's a little bit too short. By adding stories of students successfully got great jobs by Business Recruitment, can attract more people to read this article.

I think Meredith had a great time by joining Business Recruitment. Reading her article, would make me want to know more about it. So I think she can add some more details to each event under Business Recruitment, and add some activities photos. Meredith was asking if she should add some reflections about preparing Business Recruitment, but I suggested that would be a little awkward for her article. After all, she want to write an introductory news, not an experience expression.

NCU's Annual Business Recruitment

Change yourself, change your future!

In NCU, every year (mostly in March) there is a whole-month event called Business Recruitment. It is held by about 30 volunteered students, and the purpose of it is to help students in NCU who plan to find a job immediately after graduate know more about the recent business trend and gain some basic ideas about what qualities are essential to possess when finding a job.
The whole-month event includes a series of activities such as lectures, forums, business employment instructions; last but not least, at the end of the month, the biggest activity---Careers Fair---will be held as the ending of the whole event. Through these activities, students will have opportunities to talk to businesses they're interested to work in face to face, or to alumni who are successful in their careers to learn from their experiences. What's more, students can also learn skills like how to create their own values, how to relieve their pressure from works, how to do job interviews and how to write resumes; during the Careers Fair, students even have chance to submit their resumes to businesses!
A sophomore from English Department, who has attended both the lecture about how to do job interviews and the Careers Fair, says, "The lecturer was professional, I really learned a lot from the lecture; but it seemed that most of the businesses joining the Careers Fair were science and engineering related corporations, students from College of Liberal Arts were less likely to find working opportunities from it."
But for me, since I was one of the "volunteered students" running this year's Business Recruitment, I would say I had a wonderful time and unforgettable experience; not only because I made a lot of good friends, the event also gave me opportunities to interact with businesses and helped me build up concepts relating to business world. In fact, I'll never be the only one who benefits from the event. For NCU's students, Business Recruitment is an event that offers them useful information and advice about their future careers, creating more possibilities for them; so it's no doubt essential to seize the chance!
